Introducing a new Beachbody Performance Recover flavor (in addition to chocolate): Orange.

Beachbody is phasing out P90X Results and Recovery Formula in favor of Beachbody Performance Recover, all in the name of science. And to make the transition a little less painful, They’re introducing a new flavor (in addition to chocolate): Orange.

P90X Results and Recovery Formula was created at a time when Beachbody hung its hat on programs such as P90X and INSANITY, which featured longer workouts that could really burn through muscle glycogen. But during the last decade or so, science has changed.

The four-to-one carbohydrate-to-protein ratio is no longer the magic ratio people once thought it to be to accomplish three main goals:

• Support hydration
• Replenish glycogen stores (your muscles’ primary fuel source).
• Help optimize muscle repair and growth

Beachbody learned that adequate protein intake takes priority over glycogen restoration, particularly when it comes to shorter workouts like FOCUS T25, The Master’s Hammer and Chisel, and 22 Minute Hard Corps.

Beachbody Performance Recover accommodates this shift by flipping carbs-to-protein ratio, providing 20g of the latter and 10g of the former to optimize muscle repair and get a jumpstart on glycogen repletion (your post-workout meal — breakfast, lunch, or dinner — can take care of the rest). Looking to the latest science and trends in sports performance also helped them expand their goals to include a couple of new ones:

• Combat exercise-induced soreness with phytonutrients like pomegranate extract.
• Offer a product that is NSF Certified for Sport, meaning it contains no substances banned by athletic organizations.

These changes are Beachbody’s way of making a more effective product that helps you reach your fitness goals faster.

If it’s a taste issue — some people just love orange Results and Recovery — Beachbody’s 6438-BBP_Hydrate_10_Packs_for_BB_526x526R&D team has worked hard to come up with something equally orangetastic, so give orange Recover a try. But if it’s more a question of wanting to focus on glycogen replenishment, consider two things. First, if you’re doing longer workouts, it’s a good idea to supplement with Beachbody Performance Hydrate regardless of what else you take. While this “during workout” supplement is hypotonic (and therefore not terribly high in carbs), it certainly has enough to impact glycogen levels. So if you take it, you’ll already be addressing this concern without Results and Recovery.

Second, if the carbs in Hydrate aren’t enough, you can always mix Hydrate and Recover post-workout. (Combining the two makes for a nice citrus cocktail taste.) This is an arguably superior solution to straight Results and Recovery since you can tweak the recipe to match the carb-to-protein ratio that best suits your individual needs.

That said, I recommend you start with giving straight Recover a try, because sometimes, science knows what it’s talking about.
